The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale was an extremely strong sale again this year with over US$200 million dollars changing hands. The average and medium prices compared very closely to last year although the upper end of the market continues to surge with 14 million dollar mares going through the ring. As such it was very challenging couple of weeks for those trying to buy quality stock.
This type of sale will always test bloodstock agents and buyers alike when it comes to adhering to budgets and fulfilling orders in stressful circumstances, while at the same time not diminishing on quality.
Although Boomer Bloodstock had intentions on purchasing more horses at the sale, and bid strongly on several lots, as always it was most important to uphold the standards he has set and enforce discipline and patience.
As a result, the hard yards paid off and Boomer was pleased to leave the sale with two quality purchases.
Hip 1401, a weanling filly by Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame, was acquired for $55,000 from the draft of Vinery Sales. Purchased for Greenwich Stud, this filly boasts one of the best pedigrees in the American studbook with her third dam being Wild Applause, herself a multiple Stakes winner and now a multiple Stakes producer.
Later in the catalogue, Boomer secured another daughter of Blame at Hip 2565. The mare named Ascertain was purchased for Musk Creek Farm from the draft of Paramount Sales. Outlaying $40,000, Boomer described her as “a very good-looking individual who was exceptionally fast on the track.” Her first two dams are both Stakes winners and she hails from a strong sprinting family which includes Gr.3 winner Unbridled Hope.
A quick visit to the Breeders’ Cup meeting ahead of the sale saw a significant pedigree update for a horse Boomer purchased at the Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale last year. I’m Pretty Strong (Street Cry) was bought for Australian clients Wilf and Rosemary Mula and her half-sister Sharing won the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
I’m Pretty Strong is now in-foal to Arrowfield Stud’s hot young sire Dundeel and is a very valuable mare with a promising future.
Also at the Breeders’ Cup Two year old Colt Hit The Road (More Than Ready), a horse Boomer purchased as a yearling last year at Keeneland for trainer Dan Blacker, contested the Gr.1 Juvenile Turf. Unfortunately he didn’t have much luck in running and was disqualified for interference caused in the straight although connections are looking forward to the stakes winning colt’s exciting future.
